We love brilliant innovators like Elon Musk, a man who’s out to change the world with some Star Wars-inspired reusable rockets and a landing pad at sea. He revealed his latest projects a few days ago via Twitter with a handful of pictures and announcements. The Falcon 9R rockets, which are designed with X-shaped fins (“X-Wings”), should be able to land on the self-stabilizing, ocean-bound pads without taking damage or—more importantly—being destroyed. While we’re still a ways off from commercial flights to the moon, this could mean great advances toward transporting people and cargo into space without burning through billions of dollars with every trip.
SpaceX will make the first landing attempt on December 16th, with another one slated for January 23rd. If all goes well, the rockets will be refueled for another launch. Until then, check out the video below to see the steerable “X-Wings” in action.
WutzNxt may not be in the business of building rockets, but we are always looking for ways to innovate. We like to take larger-than-life ideas and execute them in such a way that they become industry game-changers. We are also big fans of Star Wars in the WutzNxt office.
